M:Thankyou,Jennifer.J:NowMary,you’veworkedinMalawiaswellasintheSudan,haven’tyou?Tellme,whydidyoufirst(emphasiseslightly)decidetojoinMSF?M:Well,itstartedwhenIwasstudyingmedicineinSydneyinthe1980s.
IgottoknowtwoAfricanstudentsandvisitedthemin1990.Ibecamegoodfriendswiththeirfamiliesanddecidedtogobacktoseethemallagainin1992.Iworkedintheirlocalhealthclinicforacoupleofmonths.ThereIsawchildrenwithillnessesthatcouldbeprevented.
Itwasterribletotreatchildrenandthentoseethemcomebackagainwiththesameillnessandtoseethemdiewhentheyshouldn’thave.That’swhyIdecidedtoworkindevelopingcountries.
J:Soin1997youvolunteeredwithMSFandwenttoMalawi.Canyousaysomethingaboutyourworkthere?M:Sure.InMalawi,IwasworkingwithchildrenwhowereaffectedbyHIV/AIDS.Itwasheart-breaking.Childrendiedbecausewedidn’thaveenoughmedicines.
J:Oh,howsad.M:Yes…butI’mgladtosay,thingsaregettingbetterthere—nowadaysthereareprogrammesforHIVtreatmentthatarehavingverygoodresults.J:That’sexcellentnews.Then,in2001,youwenttotheSudan.Let’stalkaboutyourworkthere.
M:Well,youcouldsaythattheconditionswereratherchallenging.Itcouldbeunbelievablyhot…onedayIrememberitreached56°Celsius!Andthenwhentherainscame,gettingtoourclinicswasnearlyimpossible.
Theroadsbecamesomuddythatwespentmostofourdaysdiggingthecarout.Andtheclinicswereverybasic-justmudhuts-andtheonlytoolsIhadwasastethoscopeandmytwohands.J:Goodness,howonearthdidyoudealwiththat?
