Goodafternoon,everyone.TodayIwouldliketotellyouaboutamanwhoseinventionhasbenefitedmillionsofpeople.HisnameisLouisBrailleanditismostlybecauseofhimthatblindpeopleareabletoreadandwriteandusecomputers.Louiswasbornin1809,andwhenhewasalittleboyhehadanaccidentwhileplayingwithhisfather’sshoemakingtools.
Bythetimehewasfouryearsold,hewascompletelyblind.Attheageof10,LouiswasluckyenoughtobesenttoParistooneofthefirstschoolsfortheblind.Attheschooltheyhadspecialbooks.TheywerewritteninordinaryFrenchbuttheletterswereraisedupoffthepagesothatblindpeoplecouldfeelthewordsandsoreadwiththeirfingers.
Butthelettershadtobeverybigandthebookswerehugeanddifficulttoread.Theywerealsoveryexpensiveandtheschoollibraryhadonly14ofthem.Louis,whowasverycleverandcreative,thoughtthattheremustbeabetterwayforblindpeopletoread.In1821,whenLouiswasjust12yearsold,asoldiercametovisittheschool.
Thismanhadinventedacodeforsoldierstosendandreceivemessagesinthedark.Theideawasthatsoldierscouldpushawireintoapieceofpaperandthenreadthemessagebyfeelingtheraiseddotsontheothersideofthepaper.Howeverthecodewastoodifficultforsoldierstolearn.Louistookthesoldier’sideaandbeganexperimentingtomakethecodesimpler.
Bythetimehewas15,hehadinventedacodethatusedonlysixdots.Overthenextfewyears,hecontinuedtoimprovehiscode.Healsoinventedcodesforreadingandwritingmathematicsandmusic.Thenin1827,thefirstbookinbraillewaspublished.However,ittookalongtimebeforepeoplerealisedwhatawonderfulinventionitwas.
Infact,Louisdidnotlivetoseethesuccessofhissystembecausehediedin1852whenhewasonly43yearsold.Today,thebraillesystemhasbeenadaptedtoalmosteverylanguageintheworld.Blindandweak-sightedpeopleareabletoreadandwriteindependently,thankstoLouiseBraille’sinvention.
